Haiti was the first Black republic in the New World. Haiti was the result of the first successful African slave rebellion in the Americas. Haitian Créole was primarily a spoken language created by then-African slaves for the purposes of uniting the varied African tribes/languages on the Caribbean island. Haiti was first called Hispanola, then Saint-Domingue. Haiti controlled the Dominican Republic for many years. The Haitian-American diaspora spans the entire world. The primary religion in Haiti is Christianity, either Roman Catholic or Protestant. Haiti was once called the "Pearl of the Caribbean," the richest Caribbean island in the new world. 2/3rd of rum, sugar, and cotton exported around the world during the 1500s-1700s came from Haiti (then called Saint-Domingue).
