The Wife of Lafayette

Marie Adrienne Françoise de Noailles, Marquise de La Fayette (1759-1807) was the wife of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. Enduring long separations from her husband, she nonetheless strongly supported his republican tendencies. During the Reign of Terror, she was imprisoned and escaped the guillotine only after the fall of Robespierre.
