The incumbent Democratic senator, Bill Nelson, won by a significant margin (more than 20 points) over Republican challenger Katherine Harris, a two-term U.S. Representative and former Florida Secretary of State. Nelson's term will end on January 3, 2013. Katherine Harris, was a U.S. Representative and had previously achieved notoriety as state Secretary of State during the 2000 presidential election and the Florida election recount that followed. She won the Republican nomination and faced Bill Nelson in the general election.
