When monitoring a tropical cyclone the Joint Typhoon Warning Center will assess the cyclones intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale whilst RSMC La Reunion, Maurtius and Madagascar use the Southwest Indian Ocean Tropical Cyclone Intensity Scale to assess a tropical cyclones intensity.
