Descrizione Analysis of the translation into Romanian of John Fowles's novel "The Collector"
My intention in this paper is to make a critical analysis of John Fowles’s novel The Collector as well as to make my own comments upon its Romanian translation made by Mariana Chitoran. As far as the critical analysis is concerned, I based my statements mainly on the following books: The Desperado Age by Lidia Vianu (it helped me understand, among many other things, what Fowles’s place in the British Postmodernism was, as well as to spot Postmodernist features in his writings), Conversations with John Fowles by Dianne L. Vipond and The Aristos by John Fowles (they enabled me to get used to Fowles’s own points of view, concepts that had a major influence on his novel). In order to acquire the necessary knowledge on the theory of translation, on the other hand, I studied the following two books: The Translation Studies Reader and The Translator’s Invisibility, both written by Lawrence Venuti. They helped me become familiar with the various trends in the field of translation and understand that the act of translating a book is not a chaotic process, on the contrary, there are rules to be taken into consideration.
