Sonora State Highway 40 (Carretera Estatal 40) is a highway in the north-west of the Mexican state of Sonora. It runs from San Luis Rio Colorado to Golfo de Santa Clara. Sonora is one of the 31 states along with the Federal District comprise the 32 federative entities of Mexico. The state is located in Northwest Mexico with an area of 179,503 square kilometers (69,306 sq mi), making it around the size of Syria. It is surrounded by the states of Baja California and the Gulf of California to the west, Chihuahua to the east, Sinaloa to the south, and the US states of Arizona and New Mexico to the north.
