The Belgian town of Poperinghe (the supposed origin of the term "poplin") was just far enough behind the British lines at Ypres to serve as a major rest area for the Western Front. Numerous enterprises catered to the soldier's every need, and the town could provide everything from spare insignia and uniforms to the fanciest meals to be had on the front.Talbot House was founded to serve the soldier's spiritual needs, while more dubious establishments were not far off. Most of the war's great writers recorded some memory of Poperinghe. In a manner similar to the Battleground Europe series this volume covers the complete history of the town during the war and serves as a guide to Talbot House and the numerous other wartime sites that have been preserved.
