Scotland's Malt Whisky Distilleries

Around 120,000 people are Friends of Laphroaig Distillery; 150,000 tourists visit Glenturret every year; and 15,000 are members of the Scotch Whisky Society. Why does whisky arouse such passion? What is it about the drink that attracts such a loyal following and why, if it is so popular, are there only 88 malt whisky distilleries left out of the almost 800 constructed? This book records the decline and resurgence of the malt distillery and looks at the remaining distilleries, explaining why they survive today.
