Emma Pearson offers a rural holiday to orphans John and Tommy in the 1930s, and they become as close as family. Over the years, the family stays in touch, but tragedy strikes when John is killed in battle at Dunkirk. As a result, the relationship of Tom and the Pearson family becomes strained.
