Descrizione Reality and Rhetoric in European Policy on Child SexTourism
Attention for child sex tourism hasmarkedly increased since the midnineties of theprevious century. Being increasinglyconfronted with this phenomenon, the European Union(EU) could play an important role in its preventionand eradication. However, scholarly literature on therole of the EU is almost non-existent. This book notonly presents an analysis of EU policy initiativesuntil mid 2007 but also provides a comparativeperspective to policy initiatives of three EU memberstates (Sweden, the UK and Italy) and the EU. Theseinitiatives are analyzed through an innovativeapproach consisting of a 'depth scan' and a 'widthscan'. These scans prove to be a useful tool toanalyze policy initiatives as they are found toprovide a deeper insight into the complexity ofpolicies on child sex tourism. Results are presentedof how European policy operates, what majorobstacles are present and where the lacunas can befound. Both scans learn us that root causes areaddressed mostly rhetorically while in reality theemphasis lies on situational prevention and deterrence.
