This story tells the tale of two boys who look remarkably alike and decide to switch roles for a time! One boy is Edward Tudor, heir to the throne, the other is Tom Canty, the son of a beggar and thief. When the two boys meet, they are enchanted by the others tales of their daily lives and the plot to swap lives is born. While the prince is collared by Tom's father, Tom becomes more and more worried that their plot will be discovered and that he will be taken to task. Tom's blunders as he encounters the royal family make them fear for his sanity. Tom begins to learn to cope with his new environment. Whilst Tom is dining with the royal's, the prince is outside the palace gates begging to be let in, but is dismissed as a beggar child. The story follows the course of the two boy's adventures and eventually their return to their own true lives.
