The Papers v. 25; 1847-48

Compiling extant documents and speeches from December 1847 through August 1848, the volume brings the series to within a year and a half of the southern US statesman's death. They reveal that his three primary concerns during the first session of the 30th Congress were limiting the Mexican War objectives in order to dampen enthusiasm for imperial conquest, continuing his critique of the two-party system, and developing southern unity in response to the struggle over slavery in the territories.
