This absorbing autobiographical novel narrates the heroic participation of North American volunteers in the Spanish Civil War fighting  to overthrow fascism  in Spain and, ideally, throughout Europe. The parallel narratives of two very different  soldiers, Leo Rogin and Mitch Castle,   are woven together seamlessly to tell the story of the war surrounding them. Their experiences reveal— beyond the specific conflict and ideology— the complex psychology hidden within attitudes that are as heroic as cowardly, as idealistic as dogmatic.
