Descrizione Insect Thermoregulation

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Insects have been traditionally considered to be poikilotherms (animals which body temperature is variable and dependent on ambient temperature) as opposed to the homeothermic condition found in several vertebrates. However, the term temperature regulation (or thermoregulation) is currently used to describe the ability of insects, and other animals, to maintain a stable temperature (either above or below ambient temperature) at least in a portion of their bodies by phisiological or behavioral means (see below). While many insects are ectotherms (their heat source comes primarily from the environment), others can actually produce heat by biochemical processes inside their bodies (condition known as endothermy). These endothermic insects are better described as regional heterotherms (see Heterothermy) because they are not endothermic the entire time and when heat is being produced, different temperatures are maintained in different parts of their bodies (for example, moths generate heat in their thorax previous to flight but the abdomen stays relatively cool).
