The Ink Thief

The Ink Thief gains power by stealing books and paintings - cooking them up and eating the result. Then he discovers children - and their very useful intelligence. Two children, Samantha and Jim encounter this character and are soon launched into a series of adventures. They are rescued just in time by a librarian - but no ordinary librarian.
