Descrizione Improving Fish Farming to Reduce Urban Poverty

Globally, fish serves as the main source of animal protein for most people. Many Ghanaians have been medically advised to take in more fish than meat since fish is more nutritious and healthier. However, fishery resources supplied the people 60-70% of natural animal protein (Asmah, 2008). Adversely, the increasing population of the country kept on exerting pressure on the demand for fish supply. As a result of this, national fish requirement increased but its growth was not directly proportional to the growth of fish production level. This left a deficit in fish supply. Therefore the country needs additional fish production through improved fish farming in order to offset the annual deficit of the country¿s fish requirement. This research was conducted to explore the opportunities, potentials, constraints and challenges in fish farming in the Kumasi Metropolis, as well as the management systems practised. It further looked at how the address of the pertaining constraints and challenges and the effective and efficient use of the opportunities and potentials in the fisheries sector would help reduce poverty in the Kumasi Metropolis, Ghana.
