There has been increasing incidences of iron deficiency anaemia among adolescent girls. Despite of various preventive policies to tackle this threat, it has gained ground and has been prevalent on the health map of the world with India as its striking point. In addition to it other micro nutrient deficiencies, chronic inflammations and inherited disorders of haemoglobin structure can all cause anaemia. The importance of food based approaches for the prevention and control of micro nutrient deficiencies as well as for the improvement of nutrition is growing concern of FAO. In India, some of the unconventional and traditional ingredients have high iron content like Niger seeds but has been less recognized. The iron rich Niger seed product supplementation has a potential to gradually accelerate the Hb level of the subjects and can be used to prevent and treat the anaemia with diet counseling of affected vulnerable groups of the community.
