Descrizione Hydrobiology of Shrimp Farm in Lower Sunderban, West Bengal, India

The book talks about the hydro biological parameter of Semi intensive shrimp farm in West Bengal. Our study found that the hydrobiological parameters of all cultured ponds are much high in comparison with the source water. Heavy amount of polluted water discharge within short time from the cultured ponds to source water might affect the biotic communities of that area including the mangrove ecosystem. Subsequent gradual soil removal from the ponds will convert these ponds neither suitable for prawn culture not can be converted to paddy lands giving a great loss to the Society. Gradually increased values of most of water and soil parameters in all sampling stations confirming the organic polluted nature of ponds. The process of environmental impact assessment should be incorporated in shrimp farming activities to identify the potential impact on the environment and mitigation measures. Organic shrimp farming should be developed in India since organically practiced shrimps fetches good price and provide health security. Close recycle systems with Biological inputs (fish, bivalves, seagrass etc.) must be developed.
