By examining the strategies of language and metaphor in the later works of Lawrence, Humma attempts to lay the basis for a re-evaluation of their literary merit. In particular, he argues that ""Aaron's Rod"" and ""The Virgin and the Gypsy"" have strong claims to be regarded as small masterpieces.
