Physics is the science of matter and its behaviour andmotion. It is one of the oldest scientific disciplines,perhaps the oldest through its inclusion ofastronomy. Thefirst written work of physics with that title wasAristotle's Physics. Elements of what became physics weredrawn primarily from the fields of astronomy, optics, andmechanics, which were methodologically united through thestudy of geometry. These disciplines began inAntiquity withthe Babylonians and with Hellenistic writers such asArchimedes and Ptolemy, then passed on to theArabic-speaking world where they were critiqued anddeveloped into a more physical and experimentaltradition byscientists such as Ibn al Haytham and Abu Rayhan Biruni,
