The Heroic Slave

This work is the only foray into fiction by leading abolitionist Frederik Douglas. Douglas presents the true story of Madison Washington's rebellion on the slave ship Creole. The story allows him to expound on some of the major themes in his work, such as American identity and the role of African-Americans within it.
