Descrizione Gender 3.0

Joan Wallach Scott defined gender as "a social category imposed on a sexed body", which indicates sexuality and gender are correlative. The concept of gender has been developed and re-evaluated from the separation of human labors in history. People search for social assurance of their own worthwhile they are defining their own gender identity. In traditional patriarchy society, the differences in gender are unquestioned and innate and gender is also a social norm. However, in modern society, the flourish of democratic life styles and medical improvement offer people the opportunities to challenge the former concept. Contemporary gender is performative and acquired. This is observed through mass media which has been exaggerating and propagating the binary gender category- the degree of either being feminine/female or masculine/male to the public. People learn and practice gender norm unconsciously and consciously; it is impossible for an individual to be outside of an ingrained gender framework. As one of the gendered beings, my work represents the understanding of this dichotomy, despite the fluid characteristics of contemporary gender.
