First isolated in the late 1960s, enterovirus 71 is a virus of the genus Enterovirus, belonging to the Picornaviridae family. Currently, there are identified more than 70 different forms of enteroviruses, while over 70% of infections are caused by only 10 types (e.g. EV68, EV69, EV70, and EV71). According to statistics, outbreaks of enterovirus 71 infections have been occurred in various parts of the world, including Brazil, Europe, Australia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Cambodia and the U.S., especially in overcrowded areas with poor hygiene. Recently, virologists from Institute Pasteur in Phnom Penh, Cambodia have linked the mysterious deadly disease which took the lives of more than 60 Cambodian children with enterovirus 71.
