Melvin Kaminsky, better known by his stage name Mel Brooks, is an American film and television director, producer, writer, and actor who has raised outrageousness and vulgarity to the level of high comedy art through his films and television shows. Following his service as a combat engineer in Europe during World War II, he went on to become a professional comedian performing stand-up comedy, an emcee, and a social director at resorts in the Catskill Mountains in New York. 
Brooks first gained attention as an actor in 1960, when he collaborated with director Carl Reiner to bring the film 2,000 Year Old Man to life. Upon entering the film industry, Brooks wrote and narrated the Academy Award-winning animated short film The Critic (1963). Since then, he has been in a variety of films, for which he has received numerous honors. Among his most popular films are The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein, to name a few. Brooks formed his own production company, Brooksfilms, in addition to acting in his own projects, with the goal of bringing more serious material to the screen.
