We've all read about successful people who are only famous for a short period of time. They might win a gold medal, amass a wealth, or appear in a major motion picture... after which they vanish Others, such as Marilyn Monroe and Howard Hughes, attain exceptional success at the expense of their own lives. I am not inspired by these examples!
My curiosity and concentration are on persons who appear to excel in a variety of areas and do so repeatedly throughout their lives. Paul Newman and Bill Cosby come to mind as entertainers. In terms of business, I'm thinking of Ben and Jerry (the ice cream moguls) and a local hardware shop owner who is well-known for donating money to children's charities. Jimmy Carter has had a unique life as a naval officer, a husband, a businessman, a politician, and now as an international mediator and philanthropist. We've all heard of folks who progress from one level of success to the next. This is who motivates me! I've looked into them and discovered that they all share the same characteristics:
1. They are dedicated to their task. They, too, put in a lot of effort when they're playing! They rise early, rarely grumble, and expect exceptional performance from others as well as themselves. Recognizing that hard work pays off is the first step toward long-term success.
2. They have a strong desire to learn and are highly interested. They are continuously studying, inquiring, and reading! However, there is one intriguing point: while they all fared well in school, the difference is that they apply or utilize what they learn. It's not about memorizing data; it's about being able to take information and construct, build, or use it in new and meaningful ways over and over again. People who are successful want to know everything there is to know!
3. They are involved in a network. They know a lot of people, and they know a lot of individuals that are all different from one another. They pay attention to their friends, neighbors, coworkers, and bartenders, among other people. Although they may not necessarily have to be the "life of the party," many are quiet and even introverted, yet they love people and relationships. Successful people have a rolodex full of people who cherish their friendship and call them back when they call them.
4. They are constantly improving themselves and never give up! While the "overnight marvels" become arrogant and rapidly fade away, truly successful individuals work on their personalities, their leadership abilities, their management skills, and every other aspect of their lives to become even more successful in the future. When a relationship or business venture fails, many feel they can learn from their mistakes and that they will do better the next time around. Successful people do not tolerate flaws; instead, they work to correct them!
