There are two main types of dialysis: peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis. Primary health care workers are most likely to meet patients undergoing dialysis when infection becomes a problem. The first sign of peritonitis in a patient on peritoneal dialysis is usually abdominal pain or cloudy drainage fluid. If peritonitis is suspected refer the patient immediately to a nephrology unit.
