The Notch On the Ax is a classic short story. Thackeray is most often compared to Charles Dickens but he is now much less read and is known almost exclusively for Vanity Fair. In that novel he was able to satirize whole humanity while retaining a light touch. Here Thackeray reduces to an absurdity the literary fashion of the day, the vogue for startling stories and "Tales of Terror," which was high in his time. Thackeray's keen wit saw mainly one chance for literary satire and parody.
