Dear Dr. Chapman - It is the earnest desire of Mrs. S. H. Hadley, and this desire is heartily seconded by the Trustees of Water Street Mission, that you should write the story of the life of our dearly beloved Superintendent and friend, Rev. S. H. Hadley. Will you do this? We feel that of all men you are the one whom our dear friend would have suggested for this work.

My dear Mr. Smith - I have received your kind letter and beg to say that the request you make of me is indeed a high honour. I accept the work as a great trust. I will do the very best I can and at the earliest possible time I will see that the manuscript is in the publisher's hands, only it is to be understood that I am in no way personally to be profited by the sale of the book, and so far as I am concerned all the profit is to be devoted to Mrs. S. H. Hadley or to the Mission, as the Trustees may direct.
