This study was commenced upon the suggestion of Dr. Howard Lee mcbain of Columbia University, to whom the author is indebted for many Wise and helpful suggestions. To Dr. Dunbar Rowland, Secretary of the Mississippi Historical Society, the author expresses deepest appreciation for many courtesies extended at every stage of the work in preparing this study; through him, too, the author gratefully extends his thanks to the Mississippi Historical Society for the privilege of pub lishing this monograph as a volume of the publications of the Society.
