As nearly as a commercial acquaintance of some years and much patient investigation would enable, misin formation founded on ancient errors, and misstate ments of fact, have been discarded or labeled, and in the realm of science, the conclusions in which persons of undoubted reputation agree, are given as authorita tive. To the diamond alone, as the most generally known and admired among the permanent things of beauty which Nature has provided for man, this volume is devoted, in the hope that it may prove useful alike to those who traffic in it, or study and enjoy it.
