Sarmiento appealed to the Pope, and Obtained a commutation Of the banishment, with license to reside at Cuzco and other parts Of Peru until 1567. It was years before he was free from annoyance and persecution, and it was due to the great value of his services that he was protected by the Government from the intolerable tyranny Of the Inquisition.
