The present volume consists of previous contributions to this great subject with considerable and important additions in nearly every portion of the work; whilst pains have been taken to mould together the parts more nearly related to each other, and to combine the whole into one treatise. Of a subtle physical conjecture, now abandoned, it has been recorded that the theory was obviously forced by the inquirer on the facts, instead of being forced by the facts on the inquirer, as a true theory should be and may now be regarded as exploded.
