Jona Konopko Calhoun's novel is set in Poland from the end of World War I until just after the German takeover in 1939, the year she herself escaped Nazi-occupied Poland. The New York Times said, "A descendant of the nobility, Miss Konopko wields a sensitive pen [writing] about the land she loves with a lyrical and, at times, religious fervor."
