Jenny Shaw's position as a close friend and collaborator with Penny Halsall who originally wrote under the Annie Groves pseudonym allows for the warmth and authenticity of Shaw's own first novel as Annie Groves, in which nurses Alice and Edith attempt to keep calm and carry on as the Blitz sets in.
