Jhs. unternahm Jeremy Bentham den Versuch, aus der Ethik eine exakte Wissenschaft zu machen. Er wollte damit der auf Tradition, Verkündigung oder Intuition basierenden Moral eine gesicherte Grundlage verschaffen und sie damit auch entsprechend korrigieren. Er gründete das moralische Handeln auf das Prinzip der Nützlichkeit (Utility). ¿Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure.
