Desk Diary

On the Wing is the theme for the 2003 edition of the Desk Diary. Birds flutter from page to page, with an occasional sighting of exotic winged creatures, such as wyverns and dragons.Many of the photographs are of the birds that are native to England, Wales and Northern Ireland. These have been chosen to show birds in different habitats on National Trust properties, reflecting the appropriate seasons of the year. Some of these birds are increasing in numbers, such as the waxwing, which has moved with enthusiasm onto the east coast of England, and shows a taste for urban supermarkets. Others are very rare, like the golden eagle, who inhabits the wilder parts of the Lake District.Other, more exotic birds, can be seen on Chinese wallpapers, Arts & Crafts textiles and attending classical deities in statues and paintings.
