Companion of Breath

Seen as a messenger of God by a disturbed youth, John Scrounge has in reality such a dark vision of life that he retreats from the world as a librarian's assistant. Convinced by a series of encounters that he must be more of a monster than a man, Scrounge flees one night, arriving at the gate of Greymore Prison. There he is found by a high-ranking guard who brings him home but soon finds his young daughter infatuated with the houseguest. Enraged by her open displays of desire, the guard sets off one incident after another-he not only releases a mysterious inmate from Greymore, but also reveals his own shocking past.
