Descrizione The Chemical Ecology of Goldenseal (Hydrastiscanadensis L.)
Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis L., Ranunculaceae)is a popular medicinal plant and has been listed inAppendix II of the Convention on International Tradein Endangered Species (CITES). The herbaceousperennial is distributed in North America underdeciduous forest canopies throughout much of thesouth and eastern seaboard north into Canada. Therhizome, rootlets and root hairs produce medicinallyactive alkaloids. Although berberine, one of theHydrastis alkaloids, has shown anti-fungal activity, the influence of Hydrastis alkaloids on the plantrhizosphere fungal ecology has not been investigated. While a Fusarium spp. was previously isolated fromH. canadensis, this is the first report of a F.oxysporum endophyte isolated from Hydrastis roottissue. The findings suggest that the Hydrastis rootextract appears to provide selective advantage forthe endophytic isolate and influences the fungalecology associated with its root system. The analysisshould shed some light on the debate over whether thequality of botanical medicine produced by plantsgrown in stable microbial soil populations found innative settings is superior to medicine made byplants from cultivated fields.
