Excerpt from Census of Business, 1935, Vol. 1: Wholesale Distribution; United States SummaryThis volume also contains new matter not treated in greater detail elsewhere, including a section on legal forms of organization showing the basic data for individual proprietorships, partnerships and other forms separately by types of operation; an analysis of multi-unit wholesalers, showing the number of establishments, net sales, expenses, employees and pay roll by ownership groups; and a tabulation of the data for auxiliary units of wholesale organizations not included as establishments. The Census of Business, of which the Census of Wholesale Distribution is a part, was designed to cover, with some exceptions, all non - agricultural and non - manufacturing establishments in the continental United States. In addition to wholesale distribution, it includes retail trade, service businesses, amusement enterprises, hotels, radio broadcasting, contract construction, truck and bus transportation, public warehousing, advertising agencies, the insurance business and financial institutions. Mines and quarries are included in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines, and the distribution of manufacturers' sales in cooperation with the Census of Manufactures.Every establishment falling within the scope of the census was requested to furnish certain essential information relating to its operations for the calendar year 1935 or other period closely coinciding with it. For most types of business, requested information covered volume of business for the year, operating expenses, personnel engaged in the business (proprietors and employees) and compensation paid to employees. Similar data are obtain able for manufacturing plants in the regular biennial Census of Manufactures, which was taken simultaneously with the Census of Business. For agriculture, material of this type is available in the Census of Agriculture, which was taken as of January 2, 1935.The project was made possible by funds provided by the Works Progress Administration. The statistics on wholesale distribution were collected in 1936 by a field canvass of wholesale establishments in every State, county and city in the United States. The data of the entire project were compiled in the Bureau's Philadelphia branch.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
