Descrizione Bioavailability assessment of sediment-associatedorganic compounds
Determining the bioavailability ofsediment-associated compounds is an essential butdifficult part of the modern environmental riskassessment process. Numerous environmental factors,e.g. temperature, chemical contact time, chemicalspresent in the sediment, chemical and sedimentproperties modify bioavailability of model compounds, but this change in bioavailability is partially basedon the changes in chemical's desorbing fractions. However, bioavailable fraction can not be solelyinterpreted by reference to the size of the desorbingfraction. For example the rapidly desorbing fractiondid not totally describe the bioavailable fraction of"superlipophilic" polychlorinated dibenzo(p)dioxinsand -furans, polychlorinated diphenyl ethers infield-contaminated sediments. In addition, theorganisms' sediment ingestion may modify thebioavailable fraction in a way that is not taken intoaccount in the bioaccumulation models. Regardless ofthis, results indicate that the freely dissolved porewater concentration can give a better estimation forthe bioavailable fraction than do total concentrationand thus could improve the realism of site-specificecological risk assessment.
