Bird flu or avian influenza as it is as formerly known, is a type of influenza caused by viruses which have adapted to birds. Some of these influenza diseases which adapt to specific hosts - bird flu, swine flu, dog flu - may also be contracted by other ones such as the H5N1 virus which may be contracted by cats which feed on infected birds as well as by human. The avian pandemic has been spreading through Asia since 2003 and reached Europe two years later. The Middle East and Africa were affected by the H5N1 in 2006.
