Descrizione An Economic Model for Swine Production
This work begins with the observation thatsignificant structural changes in livestockproduction practices have occurred since thetraditional or piece-wise approach to the analysis oflivestock production was established in the 1950''s(e.g., Heady, 1954).The purpose of this work is toanalyze the effects of two sources of these changes, shifts in consumer''s tastes and preferences andchanges in the regulatory environment in whichproduction takes place, on overall swine farmprofitability. The traditional approach to livestockproduction analysis regards the effects of thesechanges on values generated by production componentsin a piece-wise way. The integrated swine productionmodel, developed here, is based on a morecomprehensive or integrated approach (Zering, 2001). The integrated model simultaneously accounts for theeffects of ration, growth and manure handlingdecisions on overall farm profitability and jointlyoptimizes pork and manure nutrient outputs.Accounting for value interactions between productioncomponents expands the farmer''s choice set ofactivities for either mitigating or exploitingnutrient related parameter changes. This is the mainbenefit of the integrated model. Overall farmprofitability generated under the integrated approachwill at worst be identical to overall profitabilitygenerated under the piece-wise approach to modelingthe nutrient related aspects of livestock production.
