Poverty is one of the important social and economic problems confronted by India and other developing countries, more especially in the recent times. Poverty groups are mostly illiterate and ignorant, and their social mobility is very less. They have meager land holdings house property, with large-sized families. They are tradition and custom bound people and not exposed to modern way of life. Their access to advanced technology is very limited. Their income level is very low and they are mostly engaged in low paid occupations, especially informal sector occupations. They lack of proper social and economic security and they live in poor environment. Many factors contribute to poverty. They are complex in nature. They are economic backwardness, low income, low productivity, poor infrastructure facilities, poor access to institutional credit, high indebtedness. In India since planning era many efforts were made by state and central governments to eradicate poverty.
