Excerpt from Report of the Commissioner of Agriculture for the Years 1881 and 1882Examination of the felting properties of the wools has not yet been begun, because our time has thus far been fully occupied with the work connected with the measurements of fineness, and of the tensile strength and of some of the mechanical difficulties involved, requiring the con struction of special apparatus, both to facilitate and hasten the opera tions, as well as to insure perfect accuracy in the results.This apparatus is now in course of construction, and will in a very short time be put into actual Operation. It is expected that this branch of our investigation will give exceptionally interesting data, upon which to base estimates of the commercial and manufacturing value of the wools brought to our markets. In the measurements of the tensile strength, ductility, and elasticity more progress has been made.A large number of samples have been prepared for examination of the minute structure of the fiber, as modified by the breed and the conditions to which the animals producing the fiber may have been subject.
