The astronomer John Lee (1783-66) inherited Hartwell House in Buckinghamshire in 1827, building there an observatory designed by his friend William Henry Smyth (1788-1865). Smyth's illustrated account of Hartwell - the two volumes appeared in 1851 and 1864 - illuminates both the history of the estate and the practice of contemporary astronomy.
