Why a Poster Biennale? And what are posters about?
Some say that in today’s society design should necessarily be ethically strong and empowered; they think that content is the noble part of design.
Others state that it’s in the choice of method where lays the real ethical value of design (“Those who do not design, have already chosen to be designed” G.C. Argan).
Now, where is the soul of design? Mistakes, randomness and mystical irrationality, are they all part of a good design? Does rational intellectualistic masturbation lead to a sterile and boring design, just as it did in rational architecture?
We must never forget the Greek concept of “Kalokagathia” the merging of Beautiful and Good: “He who seeks truth shall find beauty, he who seeks beauty shall find vanity” (Moshe Safdie). A good poster is like a Greek statue, it teaches us about balance, serenity, and proportion.
But some say that the lesson and the strength in moralizing proportion, harmony, and composition (in a word: form) are not enough to change a dying world. Assuming that the artist/designer (be it painter, graphic designer, stylist, architect) can’t be passively dominated by the market mermaids and has to regain the leader role of creator of dreams, the question – foggy and ambiguous – is: form or content? Ethic or Aesthetic?
