The Orfordness transmitting station is a medium-wave radio broadcasting facility owned by the Babcock International Group at Orford Ness on the Suffolk coast in the UK (grid reference TM450511). It is available for lease by international broadcasters wishing to target western, southern and eastern Europe. The Orfordness station is best known, particularly in the UK, for transmitting BBC World Service in English around the clock on 648 kHz from September 1982 until March 2011. Following the ending of these broadcasts, and with no other major clients for the station, its future is uncertain. The site was originally built for an experimental over-the-horizon radar station known as Cobra Mist.
