Although codified versions of Gaelic sports have been played in the United States for well over a century, scholarly research on the Irish experience in America has overlooked the history and significance of the GAA there. This book redresses this neglect by uncovering the origins and subsequent development of these sports amongst the Irish diaspora in America. In particular, the book analyzes the socio-economic, psychological, political, and cultural import of Gaelic games in New York, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, cities that were not only focal points of Irish immigration but were also the main centers of GAA activity in the US.
